So far the promotional material for Akiva Schaffer’s sci-fi comedy The Watch has fallen into one of two categories. First are the bits that play up the alien invasion component of the film. The other eschews the uninvited visitors from space, focusing instead on the relationship between the four main characters, played by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade. These bits are generally jam packed with foul language, debasing sexual references, and general debauchery. The new red band clip from The Watch is no exception.
This video is an extended look at material that has already appeared elsewhere. A truncated, much less raunchy version of this scene where the members of the neighborhood watch discuss their logo choices, is in the trailers.
The Watch follows four suburbanites who come together like Voltron to form an unstoppable force for good. Or maybe they’re four bored dudes who start a neighborhood watch, only to discover that there is a very real alien invasion threatening their quiet little burg. These sex-obsessed buffoons may be Earth’s only hope, and with a winged, flaming tiger on their backs, how can they lose?
The fact that the script for The Watch was written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg makes a lot of sense when you see this clip. The humor is what you would expect from the writing partners, for good or for ill, with everything turned into an excuse for a dick joke. This could be a lot of fun, but the more that comes out, the more this feels like something we’ve seen before.
The Watch invades theaters on July 27th, 2012.
