The aerial Hunter-Killer (HK) drones in Terminator are an eerie, sinister enemy of mankind. The way they hover around, blasting the hell out of survivors, and generally doing Skynet’s bidding, is spooky. If you want to see something really cool, check out this video of a radio-controlled HK drone that actually flies.
This thing is seriously awesome. Beyond absolutely looking the part, the stability and amount of control it appears to have is great. The way it hovers and flies even closely mimics that of the war machines in Terminator and the subsequent sequels.
When they set off the smoke bomb and the model emerges from the rolling clouds, it looks like something straight out of one of the films. Having the score play over the top doesn’t hurt. At the end, when the craft is flying with the cityscape in the background, you half expect it to go on a strafing run.
The autonomous robots, originally designed by Cyberdyne Research Systems, form a key component of Skynet’s military force. The crafts are capable of precise tactical strikes on the human forces, and though they’re unfeeling and mechanical, they certainly look mean and menacing. And so does this replica. In the darkness, when the lights go on, the resemblance to the ominous movie counterpart is uncanny.
This isn’t a simple toy. A hand-made Russian prototype, there is some serious work and engineering knowledge behind this souped-up RC copter. However, that isn’t going to stop any of us from drooling, licking our chops, and trying to figure out how to get our grubby little mitts on this thing.
