Sometimes blind devotion to a franchise inspires great feats of creativity. Such is the case with Star Wars Droids: The Jawa Adventure, an animated fan short created by students from the DAVE School. Though that name sounds like a scam that some guy named Dave set up in his garage, the moniker is actually short for the Digital and Visual Effects School in Orlando, Florida.
The Jawa Adventure came together in only 3 months, crafted by members of the DAVE class of 2012. You can definitely see the quality of the animation, and that the people involved know what they’re doing. This is going to be on many a promo reel when these kids try to get jobs. Definitely not as nuanced and detailed as an episode of The Clone Wars, but considering that these are students, and the limited amount of time they had, the video is impressive.
When beloved Star Wars droids C-3PO and R2-D2 retire, 3PO thinks life is going to be grand. It’s not. Poor guy can’t catch a break. Really, though, his problems are partially his own damn fault. What the hell are they doing back on Tatooine hanging out with Jawas in the first place? 3PO needs to adjust his judgment chip. After all those two bots have been through, they should know better. Jawas ain’t nothing but trouble. Those little guys are always getting into mischief. When they come across an experimental Mon Calimari ship, things take a turn for the worse.
While The Jawa Adventure won’t blow your mind—and I’m not going to lie, it totally craps the bed at the very end—this is a fun, inventive look at Star Wars fans in action.
