Public Service Announcement: Awake Premieres Tonight On NBC

By David Wharton | 9 years ago

I had to take a week’s hiatus on my regular This Week in Science Fiction column, which will return as scheduled this coming Monday. In the mean time, however, I wanted to call your attention to one notable bit of SF coolness that hits the airwaves tonight. NBC’s parallel worlds series Awake premieres tonight at 10/9c, and by all accounts it’s definitely worth your time.

If you aren’t familiar with the premise, Awake stars the excellent Jason Isaacs (best known from the Harry Potter films) as a cop whose life begins to unravel when a car accident claims the life of his wife. Or his son. He’s a little unclear on the truth of the matter, because he now finds himself shifting back and forth between two realities: one where his wife is dead but his son survived, and one where those roles are reversed. Both truths seem completely and equally real. As police detective Michal Britten finds himself leaping from life to life (to borrow another show’s turn of phrase), he struggles to discover whether one reality is a dream, or a hallucination brought on by trauma, or something altogether more mysterious.

The show was created by Kyle Killen, whose show Lone Star lived a brief but critically acclaimed life on Fox a few years back. Hopefully this new creation will draw more eyeballs and we won’t get invested in the show’s mysteries just in time for the Axe of Cancellation to fall.

If you can’t wait the few hours until the show premieres, you can still watch the pilot episode online.
