Ridley Scott’s Prometheus wowed, confused, excited, and disappointed audiences in almost equal measure earlier this year on its way to making $303 million at the box office, worldwide. Since it only cost $130 million to make Fox is moving forward with a sequel.
No official word yet on what it will be about, but Scott’s movie wasn’t exactly subtle about laying out a clear path for subsequent movies. The film ended on something of a cliffhanger and picking up where things left off seems like a natural move.
Whatever the story ends up being Ridley Scott and his team will stick around to see it through. When he made Alien Scott handed the franchise off to James Cameron for Aliens, and I suppose it’s still possible that he might still bring in someone to direct Prometheus 2 when it happens. But even if he does, Ridley and his production company are already heavily involved in creating the Prometheus sequel. THR says they’re hoping to release the next Prometheus some time in either 2014 or 2015.
It’s worth noting that while Ridley Scott definitely is involved, Prometheus screenwriter Damon Lindelof might not be. Word is that he may not be available which, depending on what you thought of how Lindelof’s script played out (or for that matter what he did to the ending of Lost), might not be such a bad thing.
