Piranha 3D was by far the most fun I had at a movie in 2010. It was everything I wanted out of a schlocky, 3D horror experience. No one expected it to do as well as it did, either at the box office or with critics. I think it took everyone by surprise. So of course talk of a sequel began almost immediately, and such talk was worrisome. The first movie was lightning in a bottle, one of those things that happens once, and any attempt to replicate it leads to inevitable disaster. Gone is director Alexandre Aja and most of the surviving cast, so you’re left to wonder, what are they going to do now?
Even though it’s most likely a bad idea, Piranha 3DD does look like it might be fun. The release date got pushed back a couple of times, and in November it was delayed again, but with no specific date, leading some to speculate that it was headed straight to video. Fortunately for us, that’s not the case, and Piranha 3DD opens wide on June 1st. A new video, The Making of Piranha 3DD, offers a mock behind the scenes exploration of the film. Enjoy, but be warned, don’t watch this anywhere near work if you want or need to keep your job.
We all knew that Gary Busey is completely insane, but after watching this I feel like he may have actually believed he was living this, and that maybe he did actually light a cow fart on fire.
Sure, there’s a giant spoiler right in the middle, but that doesn’t give away anything that hasn’t been in all the preview material already, just a little more graphic this time. Watching this video you think maybe, just maybe, director John Gulager (Feast), and stars David Hasselhoff, Katrina Bowden, David Koechner, Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, and Danielle Panabaker, might have successfully captured the irreverence and camp that made the first film such a damn blast. Here’s hoping that spirit lives again.
