The fifth and final season of Fringe is set to premiere on September 28th. While we’re only going to get thirteen episodes, they should be memorable installments to say the least. Season five largely takes place in the year 2036, in the Orwellian dystopia first introduced in the season four episode, “Letters of Transit.” The Observers, who hail from the 27th century—where they’ve finally ruined the world—have travelled back in time and taken over.

A new collection of photos at TV Line, from the first episode, “Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11,” gives us a quick peek at this not-so-brave new world.

After being rescued from being trapped in amber, most of the Fringe team, including Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), Walter Bishop (John Noble), and Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole) have teamed up with Peter’s now-grown daughter, Henrietta (Georgina Haig).

Noticeably absent in all of this is Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), Henrietta’s mother. High on the team’s list of priorities is to track down Olivia. That’s no easy task, considering she’s confined in amber. Even if they find her, then they have to free her — again, not a simple job.

Showrunner J.H. Wyman suggests that, even when they do find her, even if they manage to get her out of her prison, things might not be all that great.

They [Peter and Olivia] had their daughter taken from them [by Observers]. And most couples, when they lose a child… don’t make it through that. So what happened to Peter and Olivia before the ambering?

How this potentially estranged coupling plays out will likely form the emotional core of season five. The intricate sci-fi elements of Fringe are great, but a huge part of what sets the show apart are the compelling relationships between the characters. It will be fun to see these storylines play out in the future, especially between Peter and Olivia after the end of season four.
