With Christopher Nolan’s space epic Interstellar hitting a limited number of theaters today, and opening across the rest of the world on Friday, the next big sci-fi movie on the calendar is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1. The first part of the final chapter of the popular teen-centric dystopia is ramping up the marketing engine for the final push. They’ve already dropped tons of trailers, TV spots, photos, and all manner of viral videos, and today brings this new clip for you to check out.
This 41-second snippet is basically an extended version of a moment you’ve already seen in a recent TV ad. In Mockingjay, after being rescued from the Hunger Games arena, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself in District 13, which everyone thought was destroyed. She’s alive, and safe from the forces of President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and the Capital for the time being, but she’s dealing with some stuff, and part of that is survivor’s guilt because she thinks her sometimes boyfriend Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is dead. As you learn in this clip, that’s not the case.
Peeta is very much still kicking around, and Snow is using him as a propaganda tool in the escalating conflict between the powers that be in the Capital and the insurgents and rebels throughout the futuristic world of Panem. In reality, President Coin (Julianne Moore) is using Katniss in much the same way, as a key piece in a publicity battle. She’s more of a symbol, a face of the resistance, than a person in the eyes of the politicos. Everyone wants to use the star-crossed young lovers as pawns in their game, but now that she’s knows he’s alive, Katniss has other plans, and rescuing Peeta plays a big part in the action of the finale.
Like I said, this is a moment you’ve seen before, and perhaps the most shocking element of this clip is how restrained Stanley Tucci’s Caesar Flickerman character is. Seriously, you’ve never seen the Day-Glo talk show host so calm and reserved. Usually he looks like he’s about to take a bite out of you with his vaselined teeth.
Directed by Francis Lawrence, the third installment of Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy also stars Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Jeffrey Wright, Jena Malone, Sam Claflin, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and opens everywhere on November 21. Mockingjay—Part 2 follows a year later, opening on November 20, 2015.
