Her Parody Takes The OS Romance To 1995

Let me set the mood for you. The boombox radio just switched from Boyz II Men’s “On Bended Knee” to Collective Soul’s “December,” and O.J. Simpson was found not guilty of murder. But despite all three of those things being highly popular, you want something that isn’t so mainstream, and which has nothing to do with music or murder. You want love and affection, so you go searching in the only place you can think of: your Dell computer, on which you’ve just installed Windows 95. And there you find Clippy, that hot piece of virtual metal ass that came as the assistant to Microsoft’s Office. And so begins the video seen above, a parody of Spike Jonze’s Her, for which he recently took home the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.
Now, we’ve seen a lot of parodies about Her over the last few months, and it’s basically because the film’s premise of “finding love in all the potentially wrong places” can be approached from any number of angles. But the guys from the comedy group Late Night Basement have created the first spoof that had me laughing throughout, as the thought of Theodore Twombly macking on an eyeballed paperclip is continuously amusing.
It helps that Clippy sounds like a stereotypical New Jersey garbageman impersonating comedian Mitch Hedberg, landing boastful lines like, “I’m great with pie charts.” It’s just too bad for Theodore that Clippy isn’t ready for love. He’s only in the mood to handle documents and spreadsheets. I don’t want to spoil this one, but I think he has a better time later on when he starts playing Doom II after masturbating to topless celebrity photos on Internet Explorer 1.0.
For President’s Day, Late Night Basement went to Grand Central Station and asked random passerby a series of questions about fictional presidents, but as if they were actual historical people, and the video below delivers quite a few laughs. People would rather assume that they’re terrible at history and politics than to question why these things sound so unfamiliar. And because I know you were wondering, yes, Independence Day‘s President Whitmore comes up quite a bit, and you’d swear he was a real guy based on everyone’s reactions.
