Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. With only five months until its July release, genre fans are anxiously awaiting for more of the movie’s giant robots smacking around giant sea monsters. But will the movie win over moviegoers?

According to AintItCool.com, there was a test screening of Pacific Rim in Burbank, California last night, and it looks like the movie might just be a hit for del Toro. In fact, Director Rian Johnson (Looper) was at the screening, and he tweeted his praise afterwards.

Other viewers are reporting in with positive reactions as well. Here’s what one had to say on the IMDb message boards:

Overall, it’s probably the best summer monster movie I’ve seen, and out of summer movies in general, falls behind the new Batman series, but that’s about it. I wrote on their response form that they should be proud of the movie and that I’m glad it’s not another Transformers clone (re: Battleship). They killed it!

The early reactions also single out the film’s cast. The big standout seems to be Idris Elba’s performance as the older commanding officer, Stacker Pentecost.

I thought the performances were very good, considering the subject matter and the script. Idris Elba was great as the older commanding officer, and Charlie and Rinko both did well in their roles. Charlie Day and Ron Perlman were both awesome. It’s not going to win any SAG awards by any means, but the acting and direction were solid, and above average for a big monster movie.

Of course, the rest of us still have a long wait until July to see Pacific Rim. Thankfully, Warner Bros. has posted some new pics to help tide us over, courtesy of USA Today.

Pacific Rim hits theaters everywhere on July 11th in IMAX 3D.
