Pacific Rim TV Spot Goes Fishing For Kaiju

Guillermo del Toro’s giant monsters versus giant mechs epic Pacific Rim is nearly upon us. To celebrate that fact, Warner Bros. has released yet another new TV spot. They must have a warehouse of little mole people hunched over desks, frantically churning this stuff out 24 hours a day, because there is a huge promotional push behind this movie.
This time around it’s like they took all of my favorite bits from previous spots and spliced them together with a dash of new footage to keep things interesting. If they wanted to get people clapping their hands and frothing at the mouth, they’re doing a damn good job of it. There are robots jumping and punching, monsters jumping and grabbing, and even a robot using a full-size cargo ship like a Louisville Slugger.
The pilots of the Jaegers — the official name for the towering mechs — are tasked with protecting a city with a population of two million human souls. And from the look of this video, they’re not doing a particularly bang-up job. Then again, when you’re fighting a Kaiju, the giant rampaging monsters that emerged from the bottom of the ocean, you kind of have to take them on wherever you can get at them. That’s one of the drawbacks of being a giant-monster hunter.
Reviews are trickling in, and thus far they’ve been almost entirely glowing in heaping praise on the film. The rest of us have to wait until July 12 to see for ourselves, but things are headed in a promising direction.
