Pacific Rim Extermination PosterAfter delivering a more traditional movie poster, Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim has flipped back to the viral side of the marketing coin. The battle between giant monsters called Kaiju and massive man-made robots named Jaegers, is life or death for the human race, and as such, manpower is essential. The latest poster aims to bolster the numbers.

The message on this recruiting poster—“Extermination is not an option”—brings up an interesting question. Who’s extermination are we talking about? On the surface we assume that they mean that letting the human race get killed off is not something we’re going to let happen. I’m sure that’s precisely what they mean, at least in the world of the film. But from our removed position, you can’t help but detect a slight defeatist undertone as well, like perhaps the fight against he Kaiju is an unwinnable battle. Cleaning up their poop certainly takes a while.

When the Kaiju emerge from the depths of the ocean—through a portal to another dimension, no less—they wreck up the joint pretty hard. As a result, we create the Jaegers. Fight fire with fire, right? Thought the human-driven robots even the playing field somewhat, the fight isn’t going well for the human race. A washed up pilot (Charlie Hunnam), an untested rookie (Rinko Kikuchi), and an out of date Jaeger, may be our last hope for survival.

The early surrounding buzz has been super positive, but most of us still have to wait until July 12. The PG-13 Pacific Rim also stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day.
