Remember that “finalPacific Rim trailer from the other day? Turns out the finality of that video may have been overstated at the time. Why would we say that, you ask? Because just a few days before the July 12 release date, we’ve got yet another new preview on our hands. None of us should be particularly surprised by this turn of events. At this point Warner Bros. and Legendary have produced so much marketing for Guillermo del Toro’s epic giant monsters versus giant robots adventure, that it has probably become second nature. Maybe they can’t stop, like an addiction, and we should stage an intervention. Seriously, they have a problem, there are also three new TV spots.

This latest trailer paints the human race not as an army, but as resistance, as freedom fighters staving off an oppressor. The implication is that the Kaiju, the massive creatures that emerge from an interdimensional rift on the ocean floor, are an occupying army. In some ways that seems like an apt comparisons, but not so much in others. Their presence, size, and destructive capabilities certainly make them a force to be reckoned with, and compels people to focus on the invasion—by doing things like creating Jaegers, skyscraper sized mechs to fight the monsters. But they’re more of a devastating natural occurrence than an invading military force. You get a sense of nature run amok. Then again, I’m probably reading too much into a two-minute trailer for a movie about robots punching monsters.

What this trailer does have, is some cool new footage. There are what have become the old staples at this point, like the Jaeger using a cargo ship like a baseball bat to club a Kaiju across the dome, but there are also enough fresh bits to keep it interesting to those of us practically drowning in Pacific Rim promotion. The fish swimming past the electrical arcs is a nice touch, but it’s the shots like the Kaiju rampaging through Manila, and the Jaeger with some kind of badass chest cannon that are what is going to make you plunk down your hard earned dollars to witness this spectacle 3D and IMAX.

And then there are the three new TV spots. Each of them touches lightly on the story of Pacific Rim, showcases the robot on monster action, and you’ll find dabs of new, or at least newish, footage sprinkled throughout. The one common thread running through all three of these commercials is that critics think Pacific Rim is awesome. You see Jaegers stomping through hyperbolic quotes comparing the film the Star Wars, and Kaiju tear through praise saying what a fantastic blockbuster we have on our hands. There isn’t anything terribly interesting here, but they’re fun little clips nonetheless.

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam as a washed up Jaeger pilot, and Rinko Kikuchi as an untested rookie. Together, controlling a legendary, but obsolete Jaeger, the two may be the last chance humanity has to turn back the tide of total extinction. So the stakes are rather high. Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, and Clifton Collins Jr. round out the cast list.
