Pacific Rim Featurette Highlights The Jaegers’ Design

Director Guillermo del Toro is known for making movies that live in rich worlds, populated by strange and interestingly designed creatures. So when he was offered to make Pacific Rim, the science fiction action movie gave Guillermo del Toro the opportunity to bring giant sea monsters and giant robots to life. In the new featurette above, del Toro talks about the different designs for most of the film’s giant mechs, called Jaegers.

The word “Jaeger” is German for “hunter,” so that was the idea behind the mechs’ design. The design team had to find a way to introduce Japanese Mecha pop culture to Western audiences. That approach really shows in the film; the Jaegers look menacing and odd, while at the same time familiar. The idea of many different Jaegers from various countries such as Russia and China is very interesting. After all, the Kaiju the Jaegers battle are the whole world’s problem.

After a dimensional rift opens at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, deadly sea monsters called Kaiju invade our planet to wreck havoc on our coastal cities. To fight against this terrible threat, military superpowers build giant Jaegers to defend our home planet from certain doom and destruction. Two pilots — Raleigh Antrobus (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) — aboard an out-of-date Jaeger are the world’s only hope for survival against numerous massive Kaiju attacks.

Guillermo del Toro’s latest also features actors Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., and Ron Perlman as Hannibal Chau.

Pacific Rim will hit theaters everywhere on July 12, in 3D and IMAX.
