Pacific Rim Comes To Blu-Ray This October, Collector’s Set Comes With A Small Freakin’ Robot

PacRimGuillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim has been quite the roller coaster ride. And we’re not even talking about the movie itself (which was great fun), but rather the less-entertaining but still eventful business side of the equation. Although the flick was much-anticipated by many genre fans, and earned plenty of good early buzz, the naysaying kicked into a high gear in the weeks preceding its theatrical release. When it finally hit theaters, it opened soft here in the States, but then went on to do very well overseas, and in the last week of August it passed the $400 million mark worldwide, and it recently crossed $100 million domestically as well, meaning we might just get that sequel after all. In the meantime, you’ll just have to settle for the home video release of Pacific Rim, complete with a very snazzy Jaeger statue…assuming you opt for the Collector’s Edition.

Pacific Rim will hit shelves on October 15th, and as is typical with any major release these days, it’ll be available in multiple different versions and price points, the better to part you with your money. The big kahuna — or maybe big Kaiju is more appropriate — is the four-disc Collector’s edition 3D Blu-ray combo pack, which includes (deep breath) a 3D Blu-ray disc, a standard Blu-ray, a DVD, a digital download, and a bonus disc with bonus features. That monster lists for $64.99, but you can pre-order it via Amazon for $45.49 as of this posting. If that’s more than your wallet can stand, the standard 3D Blu-ray combo pack lists for $44.95, the Blu-ray combo pack lists for $35.99 and the DVD for $28.98 (currently going for $24.99 and $19.99 on Amazon, respectively).

Obviously one of the big draws for die-hard movie fans is the bonus features, and del Toro’s movies typically feature a nice array of goodies. The Pac Rim release is no different. Here’s what you’ll get along with the rather badass movie:

  • Audio commentary by Guillermo del Toro
  • The Directors Notebook
  • 3 documentary featurettes
    • Drift Space
    • The Digital Artistry of Pacific Rim
    • The Shatterdome
  • 17 Focus Points featurettes and features
    • A Primer on Kaijus & Jaegers
    • Intricacy of Robot Design
    • Honoring The Kaiju Tradition
    • The Importance of Mass and Scale
    • Shatterdome Ranger Roll Call
    • Jaegers Echo Human Grace
    • Inside the Drift
    • Goth-Tech
    • Mega Sized Sets
    • Baby Kaiju Set Visit
    • Tokyo Alley Set Visit
    • Orchestral Sounds from the Anteverse
    • The Shatterdome (a Production Database)
    • The Wall of Life/Rations
    • Excuse Me
    • Theft
    • “Catch You In The Drift, Dad”
  • Deleted scenes
  • Blooper reel

That should be plenty to satisfy any Pacific Rim fan, and Digital Bits says all of those features should be included on both of the Blu-ray versions. If money is tight and you pick up the DVD version, you’ll still get some of those bonus features: audio commentary by Guillermo del Toro, Prologue by Guillermo del Toro, The Directors Notebook, Drift Space, The Digital Artistry of Pacific Rim, The Shatterdome, deleted scenes, and a blooper reel.

I realize having all the bonus features on all the Blu-ray discs should probably be a given, but it hasn’t been — witness this week’s frustratingly fragmented home video release of Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

After how well Pacific Rim rallied in the overseas markets, it’ll be interesting to see how well it does on home video. Warner Bros. never quite seemed to figure out how to market it to people outside the target demographic who were going to see it anyway. I can definitely see this being one of those movies that continues to build a cult audience via word of mouth. Speaking of which, here’s my word of mouth, via my punch of fingers: it’s awesome.
