While we’re still anticipating Ron Moore‘s return to television with Syfy’s outbreak horror Helix, there’s a bit more fervor for his other upcoming series, Starz’s Outlander, adapted from the bestselling novel series by Diane Gabaldon. The still-in-production series’ promotional campaign is presumably months away, but we now have our second quick look. The photo features our two lovey-dovey main characters Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) standing around, looking as if they are both fully responsible for keeping the nation’s plaid industry in business.
Revealed by the author herself via her Facebook page, the accompanying message reads, “A nice end-of-year treat: Jamie and Claire — together!” It’s certainly a wondrous holiday gift for fans of the novels, getting to see these beloved characters standing next to each other for the first time. And Jamie and Claire seem pretty happy themselves, pleased by whatever it is they’re gazing at. Considering the bulk of the story takes place in 18th century Scotland, I think it’s safe to assume they aren’t looking at a social media meme on one of their smartphones. That was the life, right?
For those unfamiliar with the story, British Army nurse Claire is living a happily married life in the years following World War II. She goes on a honeymoon in Scotland with her husband, where Claire visits a set of standing stones that somehow transport her back to the middle of Scottish war time. As you can imagine, things don’t go so smoothly, and a warrior clan accuses her of being a British spy, though she impresses them with her advanced medical intelligence by resetting Jamie’s dislocated arm. Though she wishes to return to her husband and her modern life, Claire gets caught up in the lives of those around her. Eventually she marries Jamie in one of the strangest forms of polygamy imaginable.
Starz has been pretty good about giving updates via their website and Instagram account, and Moore recently took to Twitter to give fans updates.

Moore reveals that four episodes have already been filmed, that the ladies at the standing stones was his favorite scene filmed so far, and that it’s a complicated show with a lot of moving parts. He also shares that the show’s assumedly overworked costume designer was “some hot chick I hired.” Nobody can say Moore isn’t without a sense of humor.
