Orphan Black Season 3 Raises These New Questions

One thing nice thing about BBC America’s Orphan Black is that, when they add new characters to the cast, you can rest assured that star Tatiana Maslany is going to play a good many of them. Production has kicked off on season 3 of the unexpected hit—we didn’t initially think it would get nearly as good as it did—and now that cameras are rolling and things are getting underway, the network has revealed some details to give you an idea of what to expect from the upcoming episodes.
Admittedly, as much as I enjoyed season 1 of Orphan Black, I never wound up watching season 2—not because it wasn’t good, it somehow just never fit into my schedule—so I have to say, some of what follows came as a bit of a surprise. Along those lines, if you haven’t watched those episodes, you might want to sit this one out or risk encountering spoilers.
That said, here is what the network shared in a press release:
Season 3 plunges the clone sisterhood into unexpected territory with the realization that they’re not alone. Just when they thought they knew their enemies and allies, season three reveals our clones are more vulnerable than ever before. Highly trained, identical male-soldiers raise more questions than answers. Who are these new clones? Who created them? And more importantly, why do they exist? Sarah, Cosima, Alison, and Helena are stronger together than they are apart, but this season will put that bond to the test. Will they forge towards their truth, or fall at the feet of those that seek to control them?
The biggest thing that I took away from this is, obviously, identical man clones? I apparently missed quite a bit in season 2, but that sounds like it has potential, I just hope that they found someone as talented at Maslany to play the role. She switches so seamlessly from one character to another, and is equally fantastic in each distinct part. My favorite is when she plays one clone pretending to be another. That’s a demanding situation, and if they don’t have the right person, it’ll be hard to pull off, unless they’re all basically the same personality. I haven’t seen Ari Millen in these parts, but if he’s back, he must be doing something right.
In addition to this release, it was also announced that Jordan Gavaris, Dylan Bruce, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Kristian Bruun, Skyler Wexler, Kevin Hanchard, and Zoé De Grand Maison will all reprise their previous roles. But there will be some newcomers as well.
Orphan Black is currently filming in Toronto, and is scheduled to continue through March, with an eye on a sprint 2015 season 3 debut. That gives me plenty of time to catch up.
