One of the saddest things about being a fan of the BBC’s long-running sci-fi adventure Doctor Who is saying goodbye to the Time Lord’s companions. This pain is still fresh as Whovians recently bid adieu to his most recent compatriots, Rory and Amy Pond (Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan, respectively).

On the flip side of this bittersweet coin, however, isn’t it always fun to meet and get to know the latest, potentially greatest travel buddy? And today offers just such an opportunity, with the first official photo of Matt Smith’s Doctor with his brand spankin’ new companion, Clara Oswin, played by the lovely Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Things look very cold and rather Victorian in this image.

This also feels a bit anti-climactic. After all, you’ve already encountered Clara. She popped up in the series seven debut, “Asylum of the Daleks,” though she has yet to appear in the same scene as the Doc. If you’ve been paying attention in recent months, you have seen photos, on this very website as it turns out, of the two together on set. Some of these include filming a motorcycle chase on the streets of London.

Clara will finally come face to face with her new partner in the annual Christmas episode of Doctor Who, which, coincidentally enough, airs on Christmas Day in both the US and UK.

Also, if you’re fortunate enough to have access to BBC One tomorrow, Friday, November 16th, you can catch a prequel to the Christmas Special, as well as a new trailer for the Steven Moffat-scripted event. Both will air during the Children in Need fundraiser.

What do you think? Do you like the Victorian-period aesthetic they’re going for?
