In a few weeks, this year’s flood of science fiction movies will begin. First out of the gate is Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise. Universal has released two new TV spots that showcase the war between humans and invading aliens. Check them out:

While both TV spots center on the post-war aftermath, the first one delivers a bit of a fake-out showing Tom Cruise’s character, Jack Harper, in — what is to be assumed — the last refuge on the destroyed Earth. The forest landscape looks ideal and serene, before Jack Harper is thrown into action to take care of a malfunctioning drone.

The second spot focuses on Morgan Freeman’s character, Malcolm Beech, a resistance leader stationed on Earth. He tells the story of the war between humans and aliens and how the Moon was “taken out.” Beech teases the truth behind the war and the reality of Jack Harper’s existence.

Set in the distant future, Oblivion takes place after a gruesome war with invading aliens that forces all of humanity to leave Earth. Jack Harper is a lonely, blue-collar drone mechanic, but when he rescues a beautiful and mysterious woman (Olga Kurylenko) after a terrible crash landing, Jack’s world comes untangled as he meets a small pocket of people who still live on the abandoned Earth.

Oblivion will also feature Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, and Zoë Bell. Joseph Kosinski co-wrote the screenplay with William Monahan (The Departed) and Michael Arndt (Star Wars: Episode VII).

Oblivion will hit theaters everywhere on April 12th, and in IMAX theaters on April 19th.
