Joseph Kosinski’s (Tron: Legacy) new science fiction adventure, Oblivion, is one of the most highly anticipated movies headed to theaters in the next few months. The Tom Cruise vehicle doesn’t open until April (the 12th in the U.K. and in IMAX in the U.S., and the 19th for all other U.S. screens), but that doesn’t mean the promotional push isn’t in full swing.

So far we’ve seen one trailer and some TV spots, but a new preview is scheduled to be unveiled tomorrow, and to tease that sneak peek, MSN has released this new photo of Cruise, gun drawn, stalking through a hazy, smoke-covered wasteland. It’s pretty standard stuff. Doesn’t tell you much, but it certainly does look cool.

Set in the year 2073, Oblivion shows Earth after aliens have invaded and lain waste our home planet. Cruise plays Jack Harper, a repairman who fixes drones on the devastated Earth. He’s one of the few remaining humans, part of a team there to harvest vital resources. Most of his days are spent flying around in his cool, bubbly-looking ship, but when he rescues a beautiful stranger from the wreckage of a spaceship, his world gets all kinds of topsy-turvy and chaotic.

In addition to Cruise, the big-time cast of Oblivion features Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, and Zoë Bell. That’s not a half-bad collection of talent. You can see why big things are expected from this picture.

Kosinski adapted the script from his own graphic novel (which he created with Arvid Nelson), with a little help from Karl Gajdusek (Last Resort) and Michael Arndt (Star Wars: Episode VII). Electro rockers M83 provided the score for the film, if you’re into such things.
