Elysium

Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium isn’t due in theaters until August, but the South African director is about to wrap up post-production on the futuristic film soon. If you remember, Elysium was suppose to come out this March, but Sony decided to push back the film’s release date to maximize its box office. Instead of waiting one month for the movie to be released, we’ll have to wait six months to watch Matt Damon square off against District 9‘s Sharlto Copley in the futuristic thriller.

In an interview with IndieWire, Blomkamp talked about the progress of Elysium and what he has in store for audiences with his next film, Chappie, a sci-fi comedy set in Johannesburg, South Africa. Blomkamp revealed:

It’s kind of weird that it sits on a shelf and doesn’t come out until August 9th but I think a summer release is fantastic for the film… Elysium is basically done at the end of February. I have some straggling VFX shots that go into April but it’s almost done. The stuff looks absolutely amazing.

As for Chappie, Blomkamp is prepping for pre-production on the film with his wife Teri Tatchell, who co-wrote the film with him. We first learned about this project during San Diego Comic-Con last year, but there isn’t much else known about the film’s premise or story.

Over the past few months, Sony has released a few images from Elysium, including a look at Sharlto Copley’s Kruger and Jodie Foster’s Secretary Rhodes. With six months until its release, Elysium’s first teaser trailer is expected to emerge soon, most likely with Sony’s The Call, starring Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin, which will be in theaters on March 15th.

Neil Blomkamp’s Elysium will hit theaters everywhere on August 9th.
