Monroe Tries To Win Over His Son On Revolution, But I Don’t Care: Today In Science & Science Fiction

Ah, Revolution. I so want to like you, but you don’t make it easy, do you? You nearly chased me away when the interminable first season spent its entire first half trying to rescue a character I couldn’t give two shits about. Then you killed him right after they rescued him and, I’ll admit, that put me back in your corner. And hey, you even revealed the answer to what caused the blackout, just like you said you would! And then you found a way to switch the lights back on, briefly, but in a way that made things worse. That was great.
But this season? My takeaway from this season has basically been “Patriots evil; don’t care.” The entire storyline of the so-called returning U.S. government being secret bastards could not possibly interest me less. I don’t even know why, aside from the fact that it’s been pretty predictable, and so far their bastardliness hasn’t really had any compelling motivating purpose other than “We like power and being mean!”
Last week I had hope that we might be getting back to the show’s one interesting subplot — Aaron and the Unpredictable Nanite Cloud (one of Dr. Seuss’ most underrated books in my opinion). That’s what we were left with. But then I took a look at the official synopsis and it’s all about Monroe’s son in Mexico or Neville skulking around the White House and zzzzzzzz…
Monroe (David Lyons) finds himself in unfamiliar territory and must make a choice about his son, Conner (Matt Vairo) whilst Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) and Julia (Kim Raver) continue to tango at Jason’s (JD Pardo) dismay. Meanwhile, Gene (Stephen Collins) leads Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) to an uneasy discovery.
I’m going to have to face the fact that I would have given up on this show already if it wasn’t my job to watch and comment about it. There is no resentment more resent-y than the resentment of the show you have to keep watching when you’ve lost all interest and investment in it. Damn it.
