Back when the Wachowskis were riding high off The Matrix and working on two sequels, it seemed like they might wind up shaping the movie landscape for years to come. Instead, they went on to write the screenplay for the comic adaptation V for Vendetta, make the Speed Racer movie, and then…not much. Now the Andy and Lana Wachowski are returning to the big screen with not one but two upcoming science fiction projects, one of which just added Mila Kunis to the cast.
Mila revealed her casting to MTV News, confirming rumors that she was going to star in the Wachowskis’ film Jupiter Ascending alongside Channing Tatum. Wait, come back! I know, the Channing Tatum thing is considerably less exciting than the Mila Kunis thing. At any rate, Mila didn’t reveal any actual useful information about the movie, aside from the fact that she was going to be in it and that loves the Wachowskis. Strangely enough, one of the last actresses rumored for the role was Natalie Portman, Kunis’ co-star in Black Swan.
While concrete info about Jupiter Ascending is hard to find, the original Deadline Hollywood story about the project described it as a potential franchise. Hopefully if it makes it that far the sequels will turn out better than the second two Matrix movies. We’ll keep you posted as we edge toward the film’s 2014 release.
Nearer on the horizon is the Wachowskis’ other SF project, Cloud Atlas. Based on the novel by David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas tells six different stories set in six different eras and entwines them all together. The film stars Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, and more. It’s set to hit theaters this fall.
