Like it or not, Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Barry Sonnenfeld are back for a rousing third installment of the Men In Black franchise. This time they time travel. Along with the upcoming release comes a new featurette delving into the special effects work of creature designer Rick Baker.
While most of this video is spent singing Baker’s praises, it is cool to get a peek, however cursory, at the process that goes into making his aliens. One of the saving graces is the use of actual prosthetics, appliances, and puppets rather than relying solely on digital inserts and manipulation. It definitely makes the creatures feel more real than adding them with a computer. I wish they went more in depth with the construction and application of the make up, but what can you do?
Admittedly I’m pretty uninterested in MIB 3, save for one fact, I really want to see Brolin doing his best Tommy Lee Jones impersonation. From all of the clips and trailers, it looks like he has it down. Men In Black 3 opens everywhere May 25 in 3D, 2D, and IMAX 3D.
