Meet The New RoboCop

Now that Total Recall has come and gone, the next big controversial SF remake on the horizon is RoboCop. It isn’t set to arrive until next August, but it’s already been a roller coaster of rumors and speculation. Other than casting, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the direction the remake is taking. One big question just received a definitive answer, however. What will the new RoboCop look like? See for yourself:

These two new set photos popped up courtesy of Coming Soon. They show the film’s lead, actor Joel Kinnaman, rocking the newly designed RoboCop suit. It certainly looks…different. I realize why they want to differentiate their new cyborg from the iconic original look, but this design just seems sort of generic. It reminds me of many “battle armor” looks we’ve seen in movies before over the years. It’s certainly not a bad design, it just doesn’t have much that sets it apart, at least not in these photos. It’s also unclear which version of the suit this is, since it an earlier script report says that Murphy goes through several iterations over the course of the story.

One thing of note is that we can see Kinnaman/Murphy’s face and right hand. This suggests that they’re working from the same idea as the original movie, that some parts of Murphy’s body are salvageable after his brush with death. Whether those are the only “original parts” left remains to be seen.

RoboCop is set to release on August 9, 2013. You can see larger versions of the pics at Coming Soon, and you can read the official synopsis below.

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

UPDATE! Now the film’s first teaser poster has leaked online. See it here.

  1. Yootha says:

Set too near in the future. Again. What is it with movie writers? Add an extra 50-100 years & you should be nearer the mark. Another remake destined to fail.

  2. Hunter Coch says:

looks like he belongs in a transformer movie.

  3. Joshua Hyatt says:

Looks so much like the N7 armour from the Mass Effect trilogy.

  4. Wow, that does not look like RoboCop in the slightest… It’s their right to take liberties with the original design, but to change it outright? I doubt this will score them any points with fans of the original. Like the article said, it is generic, looks almost exactly like the battle armor from the Crysis game series.

  5. Aaron Kelly says:

“will be more serious and gritty”…are you fucking kidding me?

Robocop was not a “Friendly” movie to start with, until of course they changed it to be more kid friendly down the road, but now it looks like someone ripped off Mass Effect armor and Judge Dredd’s helmet, what a piece of shit this is going to be.

  6. Daniel Hill says:

    Wow this looks terrible.

  8. Lone Wolf says:

Looks like a stealth suit Iron Man…

  9. When Stallone made Dredd, he looked at the designs for the costume and asked “Why have you gone so far from the original look? The look in the comics was great!”

They got the look right, but still made a crap movie, looks like this iteration of Robocop won’t even get that right…

  10. I can’t help but think of Venom when I look at this.

  11. Jason Robinson says:

To echo what Aaon Kelly said, I dont know how a movie can be considerably more serious and gritty than the original Robocop anyway. I was a child when I saw it, but I rememeber the cocaine factory scene where I saw the largest number of killings that I had seen in my 8 or 9 year lifetime. I loved the original film because it portrayed a dystopian city in the forseeable future in a very plausible way, and handled the tragedy of Alex Murphy in a realistic way. I think i want to keep that as my “version” of Robocop, er go I am strongly considering skipping this reimagining.

  12. Mystelan says:

he looks like John Shepard in Spectra armor from Mass Effect XD

  13. Daniel says:

I’m guessing that there will be CGI added feature. That’s why it’s so drab!

  14. Adrian Khan (The Soca Warrior) says:

Man what the hell is this shit.
