This fall, The Maze Runner will become the next adaptation of a series of young adult novels to hit the big screen looking to cash in on that lucrative, yet over saturated market. Originally slated to come out this past February, on Valentine’s Day no less, the film has been pushed back to September 19. Though large delays can indicate problems, this move gives director Wes Ball’s film some breathing room on either side between Neil Burger’s adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent, which opens next week, and the first chapter of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, which opens in November. All three films are after a similar demographic. Now we have a new photo from The Maze Runner, as well as some news on when to expect the first trailer.

The image, which appeared in MTV’s Instagram feed, shows Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), a newcomer to a place called the Glade, as well as some of his fellow residents. There’s not much to glean from this pic, but it looks like things are getting rather intense for the kids, as they do frequently through the course of the book.

Based on James Dashner‘s best selling novel, the basic premise of The Maze Runner is that a bunch of boys are trapped in the Glade, penned in by huge walls, and with no memory of their previous lives or how they got there. Every morning these walls grind open, revealing a maze that changes day to day, and the kids have to run around to try and find a way out. But you don’t want to be out there when the sun goes down and the walls close, because at night a bunch of hideous creatures roam the maze making stragglers dead. A new recruit shows up once a month, and Thomas is the latest. But the next day another arrives, something that has never happened, and this one is a girl, also a new development. In the midst of this mystery shit gets crazy.

Like many YA franchises, The Maze Runner has a rather rabid fan base already in place, and they’ve been waiting to see a trailer for some time. Lucky for them, they won’t have to wait much longer, because it premieres Monday night, also on MTV, during the next episode of Teen Wolf, which, oddly enough, is not quite the rancid pile of garbage I expected it to be. This pairing is only natural because O’Brien plays the modern incarnation of Stiles on the supernatural drama, though in the episodes I’ve seen, there hasn’t been any car surfing to speak of.

In addition to O’Brien, the cast of The Maze Runner also includes Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poullter, Aml Ameen, and Ki Hong Lee. A sequel, The Scorch Trials, is already in the works.
