Matt Smith Not Looking To Leave Doctor Who Yet

Not since Ross and Rachel has there been so much will he/won’t he speculation in the TV world as reports come in seemingly every week on whether Matt Smith will continue beyond 2012 as The Doctor. The big news came from interpretations of an interview where Smith said he’d be interested in coming to America to work as soon as possible. Making many think that meant Smith was looking to exit Britain’s greatest export sooner rather than later.

The problem with all of the conjecture is that no one has clearly stated what will happen with Doctor Who beyond 2012. It has me questioning our ability to “read” between the lines, or whatever it is that people do when reporting this stuff as news. It’s quite simple: Matt Smith is the current Doctor; he will eventually end his run; sure, he’d work in America if he the opportunity arises.

Now a new interview is out where Doctor number 11 tells Doctor Who TV, “We work very long hours every day for nine months. The schedule is pretty brutal, but I’d never complain about it. I love playing this role, and I don’t want to give it up anytime soon.” So it looks like Smith will be holding onto his role for some time.

Or perhaps he’ll still step down after 2012. If Matt Smith signs a contract to play the Doctor for years to come, then we can all say that he’s committing to the show. Otherwise he’s our current Doctor, he’s fantastic, Fez’s are cool, and the Doctor lies.
