The Matrix Re-Reloaded: A New Trilogy In The Works?

Whoa.

the-matrix-revolutions-neo.jpgWith the popularity of the reboot trend, we’ve been seeing plenty of older film franchises getting a new coat of paint, including Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Spider-Man, and X-Men. Now it looks like Warner Bros. is bringing a sci-fi classic back to bat that we never expected: rumor has it we’ll be traveling back into The Matrix once again.

According to Latino Review’s inside sources, Warner Bros. and Andy and Lana Wachowski are teaming up again for a new Matrix trilogy. While the last Matrix movie was released more than 10 years ago in 2003, Warner Bros. and the Wachowskis are allegedly looking to breathe new life into a franchise whose second and third installments left many fans cold. While Latino Review is usually a solid source when it comes to exclusives like this, I’d still take this with a grain of salt. Latino Review has been proven wrong from time to time.the

I always mention that the Wachowskis need a hit film on their hands. They’ve had a long string of movies that were either box office or critical failures (or both), so it makes sense that they would return to the well for more Matrix movies. It’s unclear at this point if the new movies would be prequels, sequels, or an outright reboot, but the existing trilogy leaves room for any of the above, possibly depicting the earlier incarnations of the Matrix that were referenced by the Architect.

The original Matrix was a huge box office hit back in 1999, taking in $463.5 million worldwide. It was a critical success as well, and revolutionary when it came to state-of-the-art special effects and stunts. The film’s sequels, on the other hand, were commercially successful, with The Matrix Reloaded taking in $742.1 million worldwide and The Matrix Revolutions grossing $427.3 million worldwide. However, the sequels were terrible, convoluted, and honestly up their own ass with philosophical BS that didn’t make sense to anyone.

Of course, if the Wachowskis are writing and directing these films, will fans be able to get excited at the prospect of more Matrix? Say what you will about them, but their films in the years that followed have shown them to be ambitious but seemingly not very interested in making Hollywood-friendly films. It would be like if George Lucas came back to write and direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Would fans be able to generate any enthusiasm after the prequels?

The Wachowskis’ next science fiction film is Jupiter Ascending, and you have to wonder what these rumors of a return to the Matrix bode for the quality of that new film. Why would the Wachowskis return to The Matrix if they were confident they had a potential franchise starter on their hands with Jupiter Ascending?
