We’re less than two weeks away from finally getting the chance to see Cloud Atlas for ourselves. The epic new sci-fi adventure from the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) opens wide on October 26th. Overall, the adaptation of David Mitchell’s best-selling novel is garnering heaps of praise from almost every corner. People are calling it one of the most elaborate, challenging stories in recent memory, and since it clocks in at nearly three hours, you’ll want to be sure to pee three or four times before the movie starts.
A massive new gallery of photos (more than 80) gives you a good look at the ridiculously big-name cast. It’s like every famous person ever got together in order to make Cloud Atlas. The call sheet includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Keith David, Doona Bae, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Xun Zhou, David Gyasi, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, and more. Many of them play multiple roles in different times and places.
The cast is almost as massive as the story, which spans various historical epochs, from the past to the future, and encompasses the much of the globe. Everything is connected. That’s the point the film tries to make, showing how actions echo through time, and how consequences ring out over time and life.
Ambitious almost beyond belief, this is a lot of thematic ground to cover in a single motion picture. Hell, Mitchell’s book is more than 500 pages. It will be interesting to see how the Wachowskis and Tykwer are able to pull it off.
