Marvel’s Spider-Man Wants One Of These Two Young Actors To Play The Web Slinger

Spider-ManThe news just came out that Spider-Man is returning home and joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s already talk of who might don that iconic suit and swing from building to building. Marvel doesn’t waste any time. The last two actors to play the role—Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire—were in their thirties (granted, Garfield looks like he’s about fifteen), but this time around their aiming for a much younger actor and take him back to high school. There will likely be tons of names floating around, but right now the top two on the list are Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman.

This report comes from Variety and indicates that both of the baby-faced actors have become candidates for the role, though they do also say that no one has actually been approached about it yet. Right now these are just a couple names being kicked around, and you have to imagine that, even if one of them does wind up with the part, there will be many more mentioned before this is all over.

Dylan O'BrienO’Brien is most known for his role on MTV’s Teen Wolf, which is surprisingly way better than I ever expected an MTV-produced series based on a Michael J. Fox movie from the 1980s to be. The 23-year-old also fronted The Maze Runner last year, the first in a new dystopian teen franchise that was also something of a surprise at the box office, not to mention decently entertaining.

logan lermanLerman also has a franchise based on a successful series of teen-centric books under his belt, starring as the title character in the adaptation of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Though there have been two, they haven’t been wildly successful, and it seems doubtful that we’ll see more. Also 23, he’s tackled westerns, like the 3:10 to Yuma remake, indie drama in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and costarred with Brad Pitt in last year’s World War II drama, Fury. For whatever it’s worth, he has the longer resume of the two, and a bit more variety in his roles, but who knows if that will play into anything.

Like I said, Marvel doesn’t waste time, and we already know that Spidey will appear in Captain America: Civil War next year, an arc in the comics where he plays a significant role. After that, he’ll get his own solo movie that will be a joint production between Sony and Marvel. From what it sounds like, Marvel will do their thing creatively, while Sony handles the business side of the equation. That movie hits July 28, 2017, which necessitated Marvel doing some rearranging in their upcoming Phase 3.
