The money made on the actual films doesn’t necessarily come from box office receipts, but rather cross-promotional merchandise. Marvel Studios is better at the marketing game than any other studio out there. The Avengers, Iron Man, and Thor all made massive amounts of cash with merchandise and promotion. The studio’s newest superheroe venture, Guardians of the Galaxy, is not going to be the exception. New images have surfaced that showcase the cosmic team of peacekeepers in action.

HitFix unveiled the images, and we can clearly see that the leaked movie poster from Brazil wasn’t a fake, but part of early promotion, perhaps a prototype. We get a look at the whole team, including Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. Interestingly, that glowing blue orb featured in the Brazilian poster seems to be missing on the new pictures.

You can bet we’ll be seeing these images on water bottles, movie theater soft drink cups, bubblegum wrappers, and dozens of other items that have nothing to do with the movie itself. The promo images looks similar to the ones used for The Avengers, with the cast of the superhero team movie looking almost cartoon-like. Part of the reason Marvel is so successful with their movies is because they cater to children and families more so than anything. While Rocket Raccoon is a badass in the movie, his promotional image looks more cute and cuddly than anything else.

His movie features weird alien outlaws learning how to come together and work as a team to defeat a number of villains. While most Marvel movies are good at delivering high action with a few charming laughs here and there the film features a family element unlike anything we’ve seen in movies like The Avengers or Iron Man 3.

Guardians is currently in post-production with Vin Diesel doing voice work as the tree-like alien Groot, and Bradley Cooper being used as a reference for Rocket Raccoon. Diesel recently wrote a touching story on his personal Facebook page about his first day of voice work on Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant and how that relates to his current gig.

The new cosmic comic book movie follows Peter Quill, a half-human, half-alien former astronaut. He is in the middle of a galaxy-wide manhunt after he steals a mysterious orb, believed to be one of the Infinity Gems. In order to escape, Quill is forced into an uneasy alliance with a group of cosmic misfits and outlaws. When he learns of the orb’s true power, he must rally his new team to save the galaxy from a mysterious new threat, the Kree Empire and Ronan the Accuser. The movie stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens in theaters everywhere on August 1st.
