WahlbergWe’re still a long way from its summer 2014 release date but Transformers 4 is quickly starting to get together. Mark Wahlberg was one of the first actors cast in the sequel series after previously working with Transformers director Michael Bay on Pain & Gain. One of the reasons Wahlberg was so excited to be in Transformers 4 was to work with Michael Bay again and to be in a film his kids will absolutely love.

In an interview, Mark Wahlberg opened up for the first time about starring in the upcoming Transformers 4. The film series will go in a new direction after Shia LaBeouf fulfilled his three-movie commitment to Michael Bay, Paramount Pictures, and toy company Hasbro. Although we are not completely clear on who Wahlberg will play, we know he’s the father of newly cast Nicola Peltz’s teenaged character. Wahlberg reveals…

He (Michael Bay) said to me (on set), ‘What do you think about doing a Transformers movie with me?’ I said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do? He told me and I said, ‘Absolutely!’ I think it will be the most challenging role that I’ve played and it’s an opportunity for me to do something extremely different. It’s going to be very different from what the first ones were. I’m excited about it. I talked to Steven Spielberg and I talked to Brian Grazer and I said, ‘Don’t worry guys, this is not me taking a paycheck and running with it. I liked what the guys did with like The Avengers, for instance. When I watched that movie I was not interested in seeing it at all but it was entertaining for me as well as for my kids. I think they did a really good job and we want to do something special with it, so I’m excited about it.

It’s interesting that Wahlberg mentions The Avengers during this interview. Will Transformers 4 be more of a team action movie like The Avengers? It seems like that will be the new trend in Hollywood. Either way, it will be good to see Mark Wahlberg leading a new action franchise with Transformers 4.

Hollywood has been trying to sell Wahlberg as an action star since Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake in 2001. The action persona hasn’t quite fit Wahlberg’s brand starring in middling action movies including Max Payne, Shooter, and Contraband but maybe with the help of Michael Bay, Wahlberg can finally crack through the ceiling to become a legitimate action hero.

Transformers 4 will open on June 29th 2014.
