With Harrison Ford rumored to be joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII, it’s no secret that Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are expected to join too. How could you have a Star Wars movie with Han Solo, but without Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia?

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mark Hamill talks about his status with Lucasfilm and the new Star Wars movie. Apparently, Kathleen Kennedy and Michael Arndt have been taking meetings with Hamill and Carrie Fisher. Hamill explains:

They’re talking to us. George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we’d be interested. He did say that if we didn’t want to do it, they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven’t signed any contracts. We’re in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed — on their end, not mine. They’re more busy than I am.

A few days ago, there were rumors that the Star Wars sequel trilogy would feature the Solo and Skywalker offspring. Mark Hamill gave his insight on what he thinks his character, Luke Skywalker, would be up to in the new Star Wars movies. Hamill reveals:

I’m assuming, because I haven’t talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring — like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range, an influential character. … When I found out that ultimate good news/bad news joke — the good news is there’s a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she’s your sister — I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to wind up like Sir Alec. I’m going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots.’

Mark Hamill also expressed his interest in seeing “the old gang” back together in the new Star Wars movies. He’d be excited to see “the key trio” back and guiding a new generation of Star Wars heroes. Hamill continues:

Another thing I’d want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that’s around from the original [returning]? I want to make sure that everybody’s on board here, rather than just one.

It would be really amazing to see Luke Skywalker play the mentor role in the new Star Wars movies. To see his character’s evolution from wide-eyed moisture farmer to Jedi Knight, and then eventually Jedi Master, would be a treat. If that were the case, would they kill off Luke Skywalker to mirror Obi-Wan Kenobi’s death in A New Hope? Hopefully, Michael Arndt would come up with something cleverer than that.
