One of the biggest winners of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which went from something we were looking forward to, to something we need to see RIGHT DAMN NOW thanks to the amazing footage Warner Bros. premiered at the Con. With almost no dialogue at all, the footage served up a jaw-dropping mix of crazy post-apocalyptic vehicles, starkly beautiful wastelands, and more than a little of the old ultra-violence. Also, a shaven-headed Charlize Theron with a cybernetic arm, something that should not be nearly as confusingly attractive as it is. Now the blokes over at ComicBookMovie have shared three new shots of Tom Hardy as Max. I’m guessing the albino gentlemen up top erased something off Max’s solar-powered DVR.
Fury Road is one of those projects that seemed doomed to never see the light of day. The fourth Mad Max film spent almost a quarter century stranded in various layers of development hell, struggling to find financing and eventually losing its ostensible lead as original Max Mel Gibson got old. Even once Miller had a script he liked, it still took several more years before Fury Road came together, but damned if it doesn’t look like it’s going to be worth the wait. And I have to say, Hardy is looking like a top-notch choice to take up the mantle as Max.
Written by Nick Lathouris, Brendan McCarthy, and Miller himself, Fury Road finds Max crossing paths with a woman named Furiosa (Theron), who “believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.” Fury Road is supposedly almost just one continuous, action-heavy chase sequence, which might be a bad thing for a director less skilled at artful automotive destruction than Miller. But with Max still in the capable hands of his creator, we’re pretty confident this is going to be amazing. Not convinced? Check out that Comic-Con footage a few more times.
Mad Max: Fury Road will haul ass into theaters on May 15, 2015.
