If you’ve seen Rian Johnson’s brilliant Looper already, you know how the narrative can get a bit pretzel-y. That’s not unusual when it comes to time travel movies, but you may find yourself leaving the theater like I was: wanting to go home and sketch some diagrams to figure out how everything connected together. Thankfully you don’t have to, thanks to a nifty infographic that breaks it all down: both Joe’s twisty and fluctuating timeline as well as that of a certain other party, if you know what I mean.
And if you don’t know what I mean? Then get the hell out of here until you see Looper, you maniac! You already know too much! Seriously though, the less you know going into Looper, the better, so we’re hiding the infographic behind a clickable shot of Old Joe (Bruce Willis) giving Young Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a friendly hug. For the love of god, don’t venture past the jump, and don’t click the image unless you want to be spoiled! Seriously, we’re naming names and talking specifics after the jump. You’ve been warned!
It’s interesting in retrospect that, as much as Looper is about the two Joes, it’s almost more about a character that we never actually see: the so-called Rainmaker. Sure, we see Cid — the kid who will one day grow up to be the Rainmaker, at least on the original timeline. It’s sort of a reverse Terminator, with the ultimate goal being the undoing, rather than the saving, of a powerful and influential character in the future. There are also shades of Lost, specifically the whole subplot about how Claire’s baby had to be raised by her or something vague and bad would happen.
Hopefully the infographic from Rick Slusher and the folks at Film.com helps answer any questions Looper left you with. Now I just need to find time to go see it again…
