If you live in the San Francisco area, or can get there by this weekend, you can take part in a geeky event that should put a smile on any science fiction fan’s face. This Saturday, February 8, San Fran will become the nameless city from the cult classic 1976 sci-fi film Logan’s Run (and the William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson book it was based on). And regardless of how old you are in real life, if you participate in this event, you just turned 30 and your number is up…
If you’re not boned up on your Logan’s Run backstory, it involves a seemingly utopian future society where everyone lives crazy, hedonistic lives…up until they turn 30. Then they have to submit to a ceremony called “Carrousel” [sic], which is a fancy way of saying “getting fucking vaporized.” The system was designed as a reaction to overpopulation and limited resources within the domed city — you get three awesome decades, then it’s night-night time. Understandably, however, there are some citizens who aren’t on board for that plan at all, so they run. Logan 5 (Michael York) is a “Sandman,” tasked with catching Runners and killing them or bringing them back. But after Logan’s lifetime is cut short, he’s forced to become a Runner himself, and go in search of the mythical “Sanctuary” where Runners can live out their natural lives in peace.
That system of Runners and Sandmen is the core basis of the upcoming Logan’s Run game. Participants will get to take the role of either Sandmen or Runners, and then the game is afoot. Runners will be trying both to find Sanctuary and to stay ahead of their Sandmen pursuers, and it sounds like there will be plenty of surprises along the way. Sadly, I’m guessing none of them will involve a naked 1976 Jenny Agutter.
Tickets for the event are limited, so if you’re interested you better grab yours while you can. If you want to be a Sandman, it’ll cost you $50 and you’ll need to show up for your “briefing with Central CPU” on Saturday at 6 pm. Runner tickets are a steal at only $20, and you’ll need to arrive at 6:30. The event is set to run from 6:30 – 10pm, so I’m guessing Sanctuary isn’t going to be too terribly far away from the starting point. Check the steam tunnels. (Does San Francisco have steam tunnels?)
You can find more information and purchase tickets on the official website, and here’s the full write-up to entice you. Run, Runner!
This February, The Multiverse Council brings you Logan’s Run, brought to life as an epic live-action street game in the alleys of San Francisco.
When your lifeclock turns black, will you accede to the mandatory euthanization ritual of Carrousel, or will you run? Search the corners and nooks of the City for the secret of Sanctuary. Discover strange sights and hidden peoples, some trustworthy — some not — all while evading ruthless squads of Sandmen searching for Runners at every turn.
This is a street game in the style of Journey To The End of The Night. There will be 1-2 miles of walking involved: so wear comfortable shoes. There may be brief periods of running and chasing, but players of all levels of athletic ability will enjoy themselves.
