It looks like it’s really going to happen. The long-awaited fourth film in the Mad Max franchise is currently in production and more set photos of Mad Max: Fury Road are being leaked to the Internet. I’d like to think director George Miller is intentionally leaking them to prove Mad Max: Fury Road is finally being made.
The photos, which originally popped up on collider reveal new badass post-apocalyptic vehicles, weapons, and costumes from the upcoming re-imagining of the 1979 cult-classic. Mad Max: Fury Road started production on July 9th in Africa after long delays due to flooding in Broken Hill, Australia, the film’s original shooting location.
Mad Max: Fury Road has been in development hell since 1985 after the release of the third film in the series, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. In 2001, Miller was in talks with the star of the original Mad Max; Mel Gibson to do Fury Road but the project later fell through due to the film’s bloated budget. The film was later fitted for a 3D production in 2010 and now it looks like Mad Max: Fury Road will finally be completed. It only took 27 years to get off the ground.
Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception) will star as the new road warrior Max Rockatansky as his character travels through a post-apocalyptic wasteland during the Road Wars. Mad Max: Fury Road will also feature Charlize Theron, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Nicholas Hoult and Zoë Kravitz. The film will be released sometime in 2013, but knowing the history of this project, a 2013 release seems generous.
