Karen Gillan Dresses Like The Pink Power Ranger For Her ALS Challenge Video

You already love Karen Gillan. Being on Doctor Who for a number of years, as his companion Amy Pond, pretty much guarantees that. But add to that the fact that she’s stunningly beautiful, a talented actress, and was willing to shave her head and paint herself blue to play Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and that only further proves her awesomeness. (We really, really, really wish that Selfie show she’s in this fall didn’t look like so god-fucking-awful, she’s better than that.) And beyond all of that, she turned in one of the better ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos we’ve see yet.

The last couple of weeks have been a continual parade of celebrities trying to one up each other with these challenges, which are designed to raise funds and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, research. Charlie Sheen dumped a $10,000 donation over his head and challenged some former costars to do the same, Patrick Stewart wrote a check and dropped some ice in a nice stiff drink, and Gillan, for reasons known only to her, dressed up like the pink Power Ranger. I don’t know why, but that doesn’t make it any less funny.

She tweeted her video, and after decrying the fact that it took so long for her to be challenged (former Doctor Matt Smith and occasional Doctor Who scribe Neil Gaiman both finally nominated her), she gets doused in ice water and nominates Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Barack Obama, you know, that guy that runs America. I’m sure he’s been called out a lot already, but I hope it’s Gillan’s that he accepts, because that would be rad.

GillanToyWhile this, in and of itself, is a good time, this video is even better because she brings some friends along for the ride. You may or may not notice that one of the ice dumpers, dressed as the red Power Ranger, is none other than John Cho, who plays Sulu in the rebooted Star Trek movies, among other roles (I’m partial to Harold from the Harold and Kumar movies, myself). And apparently the green Power Ranger is someone named Wee Keith (I’m not making that up, that’s the name she mentions in her tweet). I don’t know the nature of the relationship between Gillan and Wee Keith, but Cho is Gillan’s costar on Selfie (he’s better than that, too). But then they dance.

I never watched Power Rangers. I was old enough by the time it exploded on American shores to think it was stupid, but a great number of people seem to rather enjoy it, and those fans are going to be rewarded with a big budget studio adaptation of the property in a few years. Perhaps this will double as Gillan’s audition video for that film. It opens July 22, 2016.
