Jupiter Ascending’s Japanese Trailer Looks Pretty Much The Same As The Domestic One

With all the great science fiction movies coming out this year, such as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s easy to see how a movie like Jupiter Ascending might get lost in the shuffle. After all, it only comes out a week after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the film’s directors, Andy and Lana Wachowski, have lost favor with general audiences after the release of Cloud Atlas, Speed Racer, and The Matrix Revolutions.

Maybe Jupiter Ascending could be seen as some sort of redemption, not just for its characters, but also its sibling filmmakers. The new Japanese trailer above showcases some of the sci-fi film’s action and amazing special effects. The film looks like it will look visually pleasing and spectacular, but will its story be up to snuff? While the Wachowskis are seen as overly ambitious at times, their movies have only worked on the surface level as of late.

There’s no denying the brilliance of that first Matrix movie. However, it’s been a long stream of lukewarm and expensive critical and commercial failures since then. While I’m a big fan of The Matrix, I’m reserving my enthusiasm for Jupiter Ascending until I watch the film. It looks action packed, but I’m afraid it’s going to be a less than exceptional piece of science fiction.

Jupiter Ascending is going to have a tough time trying to find an audience this July. It opens a mere week after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and on the same day as Disney Toons’ Planes: Fire and Rescue. The following week Bret Ratner’s Hercules: The Thracian Wars, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is released. Jupiter Ascending is going to need a big box office weekend if it hopes to compete, but that doesn’t look likely with the type of movies opening around it.

Jupiter Ascending follows Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a woman destined for great things, but who suffers from an endless run of bad breaks. Only when she meets Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered alien hunter, does she begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along. She has a genetic signature that marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance as Queen of the Universe.

The Wachowskis’ next sci-fi film also stars Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D’Arcy, and Tim Pigott-Smith. The movie will open in theaters everywhere on July 18, 2014, in 3D and IMAX.
