Tron 3 Will Be Like Empire Strikes Back, Says Director

TronWhile Joseph Kosinski is getting ready for the release of his new sci-fi film Oblivion starring Tom Cruise in about four months, the director has big plans for the upcoming Tron 3, which was recently announced by Disney. Kosinski wants to explore the Grid and the world of Tron for multiple films, not just Tron 3.

In an interview, Kosinski spoke about how excited he was for starting to work on Tron 3 after Oblivion premieres next April. He wants to make the third film the Empire Strikes Back of the Tron film series. If that were the case, would the original Tron from 1982 be a prequel? Kosinski revealed…

Obviously we hinted some things at the end of Legacy, it’s kind of there for people to see what that potential is. So we just want to make sure that we have a script that delivers on that promise on an epic scale. He continued, I’ve said it would have to be our Empire Strikes Back for me to come back and for me to pull the whole team back together. I think we do have that idea. We do have the idea that feels big and really blows the doors off this franchise. It’s hinted at promises of something for two movies now, for thirty years, so it’s time to deliver on that.

Last week, Disney hired screenwriter Jesse Wigutow (Eragon) to re-write David DiGilio’s (Eight Below) original Tron 3 script. Wigutow is currently working with The Hunger Games director Gary Ross on the film adaptation of the young adult book series Peter and the Starcatcher, featuring iconic characters Peter Pan and Captain Hook for Disney. Returning to Tron 3 will be Garrett Hedlund to reprise his role as Sam Flynn from Tron: Legacy and the short film Tron: The Next Day.
