Elysium Citizenship InitiativeWith only three months until its release Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is positioned to be one of the most thought-provoking science fiction movies of the year. If Elysium is anything like Blomkamp’s previous film District 9, then sci-fi genre fans and general audiences are in for something special this August. To get ready for the dystopian film, Sony has launched a new viral marketing campaign that highlights the film’s premise of exclusive entry aboard the elite space station Elysium.

They’ve re-tooled the film’s official website ItsBetterUpHere.com to feature a new eligibility test to see if you have what it takes to join the wealthy on the orbiting space station. The Elysium Citizenship Initiative is a series of questions given by an automated (and very smug) Border Agent numbered 002237. The automaton gives you a brief history of the space station, which was first established in the year 2097. The series of questions can range anywhere from your income to your morality to whether or not you are at your peak physical condition.

I’ve taken the test a few times and I’ve failed to gain access to the elite Elysium every time. Maybe you’ll do better. You can also share your results to Facebook and email.

Elysium takes place in the year 2154, when the world is separated into two distinct social classes: the wealthy and powerful live a luxurious, disease-free lifestyle on the orbiting space station, while the poor are left to scrounge for food and water in a chaotic overpopulated Earth. Max has recently developed cancer, and his only hope for survival is to take a risky mission to Elysium to find a cure. While the space station’s Secretary Delacourt is sworn to protect its citizens from outsiders and enforce its harsh anti-immigration laws.

The science fiction social allegory features actors Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, William Fichtner, and Faran Tahir as Minister Patel. Neill Blomkamp wrote and directed the new film.

Elysium will hit theaters everywhere on August 9th. Check out my test results below:
