Johnny Depp May Star In Cinematopher Wally Pfister’s Directoral Debut Transcendence

Long-time Christopher Nolan collaborator, cinematographer Wally Pfister, may lock up actor Johnny Depp to star in his directorial debut, Transcendence.
According to THR, Depp is currently in talks with Pfister’s producers, so the film Transcendence would be the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s next project after Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger for Disney. The Lone Ranger is due in theaters on July 3, 2013.
The plot details of the science fiction mind-bender have been well guarded by Pfister and his producers, but some are saying the film by first time screenwriter Jack Paglen is in the same vein as Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Nolan’s Inception. This seems fitting, as Pfister worked on the photography of Inception for Christopher Nolan in 2010. Transcendence is about a man who builds “a computer that develops a malevolent awareness.” If Depp were cast in the film, he would play the computer’s creator (although we wouldn’t be surprised if Depp wanted to play the computer).
Pfister is also looking to cast actor Noomi Rapace as the female lead, and perhaps James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire in supporting roles. Django Unchained‘s Christoph Waltz also has an offer for another supporting role in Transcendence.
Cinematographer Wally Pfister has worked with director Christopher Nolan since the year 2000, collaborating on every Nolan film since Memento, including Insomnia, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight Rises. Pfister won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his outstanding work on Christopher Nolan’s Inception in 2010. With the conclusion of Nolan’s Batman series, the duo has cordially parted ways so Pfister could pursue a career as a director.
Principal photography on Transcendence is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2013 for Warner Bros.
