With only a few weeks until director James Gunn goes into production on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the comic book movie studio is getting closer to filling out the last gaps in its gigantic cast. Actor John C. Reilly was added to the film’s cast, and now it’s been confirmed that he will be playing the leader of the Nova Corps.
According to Deadline, Reilly will play Rhomann Dey from the planet Xander. Academy Award-nominated actor Glenn Close will play as a member of the Nova Corps under the leadership of Reilly’s Rhomann Dey. Her character is described as a “Nick Fury” type. With the addition of Reilly, it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy will have its fair share of comedic actors, along with Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, the leader of the cosmic team of peacekeepers.
Rhomann Dey is the leader of the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police squad from the planet Xander. When the space pirate Zorr destroyed his home planet, Rhomann Dey vowed vengeance for the death of his wife and family. According to HitFix, Rhomann Dey was designed to be the “Agent Phil Coulson” of the Guardians of the Galaxy universe, so it will be interesting to see what James Gunn does with the character in the new Marvel movie.
John C. Reilly gained recognition for his role in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York in 2002. That same year, he received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in the film adaptation of the musical Chicago. Reilly mostly appears in comedies such as Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Step Brothers, but he’s also known to appear in the occasional drama, including The Hours, The Good Girl, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia.
The growing cast of Guardians of the Galaxy is extremely impressive! With the likes of Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, and now John C. Reilly, Guardians of the Galaxy is probably the most high-profile Marvel movie since The Avengers. You can also add space pirates to the long list of science fiction strangeness that the new film will surely feature.
Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
