Over the weekend some potential plot details for Star Wars: Episode VII hit the airwaves—not the first, certainly not the last we’ll encounter before the movie drops December 18, 2015. We’ll have to wait and see if any of these rumors come to pass, but now some additional bits concerning the identity of one of the film’s leads have found their way into the public sphere.
There are SPOILERS beyond this point, you may want to STOP READING if you’d rather not know about this sort of thing. And again, these are unconfirmed rumors and should be treated as such, but that doesn’t mean they won’t ruin your day.
The potential news that came out yesterday involves the basic set up and kick off of the action, including revealing that the two main characters are played by franchise newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. At the time there were no details about the characters, but Badass Digest, who broke the original scoop, is back with some newly acquired specifics that could have a huge impact on that far, far away galaxy.
According to the site’s sources, Boyega plays a storm trooper who reportedly both deserts his post—which would indicate why he might be hiding out on a remote desert planet as he is—and teams up with Ridley’s character. The original report states that after the two find a severed hand clutching a lightsaber—it apparently falls from space and lands in front of them, somehow—which then kicks off a journey to find the hand’s owner, again, for some reason.
Along the way, the two meet up with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), who recognize the weapon as belonging to Luke Skywalker. They haven’t seen their old friend in 30 years, not since the events of Return of the Jedi. Apparently they blew up the Death Star, crippled the Empire, and just kind of said, “Well that was fun, have fun dating my sister, see you later,” and went their separate ways. The more you think about this, the bigger the holes seem to be.
If this does pan out—big emphasis on if—and Boyega is an AWOL storm trooper, that would mean some interesting things for the galaxy. Perhaps the victory at the end of Jedi wasn’t quite as complete and total as we all thought, especially if there are still storm troopers running around. Sure, they blew up the Empire’s latest super weapon, Emperor Palpatine is dead, and Darth Vader is no more. These are all big blows, crippling blows, but that doesn’t mean they’re down for the count. The Empire is a big, sprawling enterprise, and there are surely people waiting in the wings to fill the power vacuum, who is to say that isn’t someone even worse ready to swoop in, take over, and keep up the bad fight.
So what do you think of these latest rumors? Think there’s any validity, or are they compete and total nonsense?
