jeff goldblumI’m pretty sure extraterrestrial life can put together a large-scale invasion of Earth more quickly than director Roland Emmerich can pull together all the necessary pieces for Independence Day 2 to happen. There’s good news though, from the brainiest of the bunch himself, as Jeff Goldblum confirms that there is a part in the presumably explosive sequel for him, and that official talks may be coming up soon. Unless, of course, they aren’t. Such is the game sci-fi fans are forced to play.

Speaking with Time, Goldblum said in his own quirky way that the talks between him, Emmerich, and producer Dean Devlin have been ongoing, and he even says that a script from Carter Blanchard was handed in as recently as last weekend, though we obviously can’t take that as a legitimate confirmation. Here’s what he had to say about it:

I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.

If the world is in trouble, we need David Levinson on our side, people! As far as the script is concerned, he told Time, “Maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing.” One would have to assume that an Independence Day 2 script would be Hollywood-washed until all that’s left is CGI and trailer-ready quotes. But it’s been 18 years since the first film, so I’ll gladly accept any amount of cornball dialogue and implausible situations at this point.

Goldblum has been one of the main sources of (admittedly minute) info about Independence Day 2 in the past. Emmerich first said last year that Goldblum would likely return along with Bill Pullman, and the actor himself confirmed earlier this year that talks were being had. Next year, we might even get to hear that he read the script.

Goldblum, who will sadly be missing from Colin Treverrow’s Jurassic World, recently made headlines by starring in an absurdly amusing General Electric commercial for a long-lasting lightbulb that you can turn on with your cellphone. Take a peek at the studly thesp playing piano in a hot tub in the video below, which was directed by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim.

How long will it be before we know anything more about Independence Day 2? Considering the film still has a release date set for July 1, 2016, the clock is ticking. Of course, they might just move the release date back again.
