James GunnOver the course of the massive marketing push for Marvel’s upcoming space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn has made no secret that he would love the opportunity to come back and direct more installments of the comic book giant’s latest cinematic endeavor. Now it sounds like he’s going to get the chance to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote Guardians with Gunn, told The Wrap at San Diego Comic-Con that the Slither director will both write and helm the sequel. She said:

They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction…Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll wanna do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen…James will be directing Guardians 2, so he would also be writing Guardians 2.

And just in case you were wondering, this is awesome. I saw Guardians earlier this week, and I can’t say much about it because I’m still embargoed, but it is as good if not better than you hoped it would be. The idea that there will be more of this in the future is the best news you can hear. While I’m bound not to talk about it, there are a lot of critics out there who aren’t (including our good friends over at Cinema Blend, who gave the movie five stars out of five). There are currently 25 reviews on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and it has a well-deserved 100% fresh rating.

The Gunn news hasn’t been officially confirmed by Marvel, but considering the advance critical acclaim and the fact that Guardians is tracking to make at least $60 million its opening weekend, not to mention the myriad crossover possibility with existing titles, this isn’t a surprise to anyone. Odds are that somewhere in those eight untitled movies that Marvel has already scheduled between now and 2019, at least one of them will be Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows a rag tag group of space outlaws searching for a mysterious orb who have to find a way to come together in order to stop the destruction of an entire world. The group—comprised of the sarcastic leader Peter Jason Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt); green-skinned assassin, and adopted daughter of Thanos, Gamora (Zoe Saldana); big, blue, vengeance-fueled madman Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista); anthropomorphic raccoon, Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper); and Rocket’s bff, and hired organic muscle, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), who can only say, “I am Groot”—must thwart the efforts of the nefarious Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). The film opens everywhere one week from today on August 1.

Now the rampant speculation can begin for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The obvious possibility is one that has already been kicked around quite a bit, and denied every step of the way by anyone might have any inside knowledge: Planet Hulk. But there are also a ton of other possibilities. Are there arcs you would like to see Marvel and the Guardians tackle? Let us know what you’d like to see in the comments below.
