With the release of Thor: The Dark World tomorrow, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back to close out the year. While the comic book source material is steeped in the fantasy genre, it’s amazing how director Alan Taylor infuses the film with so many science fiction elements with the Dark Elves. Thor: The Dark World is almost the perfect hybrid of fantasy and science fiction, so it’s only appropriate that the Thor sequel’s post-credits sequence will tease Marvel’s upcoming superhero space opera, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Director James Gunn was at The Dark World’s world premiere in Los Angeles and talked to MTV News while on the red carpet. He talked about working with Bradley Cooper to flesh out the character of Rocket Raccoon. Apparently, Gunn and Cooper are currently recording all the dialogue for the film. Gunn told MTV:

‘I’m a very controlling guy. [Rocket Raccoon] is a big one for me, and I have very specific ideas about what Rocket Raccoon is like,’ Gunn said. ‘[Cooper] lets me push him any which way to get where I want to go. He does not give up. He sits there in the studio all day long until his voice is sore and his eyes are bloodshot, and he’s bleeding from his nose and ears. But he’s turned in some good raccoon voices, so who cares?’

Gunn also discussed the tree-like alien Groot. While actor Vin Diesel has strongly hinted at his role Groot, his participation in Guardians of the Galaxy still is not official. Gunn was quite coy about Diesel’s involvement in the film, mainly just talking about the character instead. “Honestly, I talked to Vin on the phone yesterday,” Gunn revealed. “It’s looking pretty good; we’ll see.”

Gunn did confirm that the characters of Rocket Raccoon and Groot will involve some image capture such as facial expressions and hand movements from the actors playing the pair, Bradley Cooper and (rumored) Vin Diesel. Their performances will be recorded as a reference to the animators creating the character, but it doesn’t sound like Rocket Raccoon and Groot will utilize full motion capture from the actors.

READ WITH CAUTION. SPOILERS FOR THOR: THE DARK WORLD BELOW

Lastly, Gunn talked about directing the post-credits sequence for Thor: The Dark World. The scene features Benicio Del Toro as Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector, with Olivia Lovibond as his assistant. The sequence directly hints at the storyline of Guardians of the Galaxy, which will involve the search for one of the Infinity Gems (my money is on the blue Mind Gem). James Gun further explained that he got the script in the morning and then shot it at the end of a second unit day. The scene took two hours to shoot. Gunn has this to say about Del Toro’s performance:

“We just kept watching him on set, being like, ‘Oh my God.’ He was probably the character who was most different from what I imagined. Although, I did say he’s like an outer-space Liberace. That’s what it says in the script, which he’s kind of doing. He really came in prepared and doing something utterly unique, and he’s mesmerizing the whole time he’s in the movie.”

Honestly, Benicio Del Toro felt more like Will Farrell’s Mugatu from Zoolander than “an outer-space Liberace.” The post-credits sequence is a barrel of monkeys! It’s only about a minute or so, but it’s the craziest minute of the entire Thor sequel. If anything could be determined from the sequence, it’s that Guardians of the Galaxy will be one of the strangest and most fun movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Benicio Del Toro, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close. The Marvel movie will hits theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
