While we won’t be seeing a commercial or teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy this Sunday during Super Bowl XLVIII on Fox, we will be treated to a number of teasers for upcoming summer blockbusters such as Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There are still a few question marks surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy, seeing as how the Marvel property is unproven and virtually unknown outside of serious comic fans. But according to Guardians‘ director, it’s going to be the biggest Marvel movie yet.
In an interview with Empire, James Gunn talks about the scale of the new Marvel movie. Gunn has a lot of things to do in Guardians, namely introducing new characters and making it stack up to other Marvel movies such as The Avengers, Thor, and Iron Man. Gunn says:
Visually, [it’s] the biggest movie Marvel has made, because of the big, big starscapes and big action sequences. Our characters are basically all villains to begin with. If The Avengers are The Beatles, the Guardians are The Rolling Stones.
There’s a lot of strange stuff in the movie. But I think the thing that makes it different from the rest of the other superhero movies out there is that they try and take something seriously that really can’t be taken seriously because the concept is just too fun at its core.
Seeing how the cosmic movie features a walking tree who only says one phrase “I am Groot!” and a gun-toting raccoon, it’s going to be hard for audiences to take the film and these characters seriously. Guardians of the Galaxy looks to be set mostly in outer space, with the only human featured in the film being Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt.
Recently, it was revealed that Stan Lee won’t be making his trademark cameo in the upcoming Marvel movie. Lee says that he’s not in the film because he didn’t create Guardians of the Galaxy, but he’s still credited with creating one of its members, Groot. I don’t think a Stan Lee cameo will make or break the new Marvel movie, but it would’ve been nice to see his face in the film.
Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill, a half-human/half-alien who is the target of a manhunt after he steals a mysterious orb, believed to be one of the Infinity Gems, from Ronan the Accuser. In order to escape, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of cosmic misfits. But when Quill learns of the orb’s true power, he must rally his new team to save the galaxy from a mysterious new threat.
Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close, and hits theaters everywhere on August 1.
