We’ve got a couple big, epic scale science fiction movies on the way with the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and the beginning of the end of The Hunger Games saga with Mockingjay—Part 1. As excited as we are for these movies, and similar big budget blockbusters, it’s always nice to come across a potentially cool genre project that has little to cling to but an idea, some ambition, and a whole lot of drive. One such project is called The Last Scout, and they could use your help. Check out this trailer and see what you think.

The first thing you might think when you watch this trailer is that this looks rather similar to Interstellar and Battlestar Galactica, but with way, way less money than either of those properties. It’s currently in development, and they’re looking for some funds, via an Indiegogo campaign, so they can finish the visual effects and do some other work in post.

Directed by Simon Phillips, The Last Scout is one of those projects that could go in either direction. We could be talking about something fun and exciting, it certainly looks like it is going to be action packed, with lots of spaceships flying around and things exploding and guns being fired. On the other hand, there are touches like the font that the titles are in, which does, admittedly, look like many things you’ve seen before. Still, we’re willing to give this the benefit of the doubt, and the story definitely sounds promising.

Set in 2065, Earth has been destroyed by nuclear war between America and China, and as a result, the human race is forced to take to the stars in search of a new home. It actually sounds a bit like The CW’s The 100, only with significantly fewer teens running around. Seven years into their journey, the crew of a ship called The Pegasus are coming close to the end of their collective rope. When they come upon a system with a planet that may work as a refuge, they discover another ship is already there, and they have to figure out the best way to proceed. Sounds harrowing, and the stakes are certainly high enough to pique your interest.

The Last ScoutThe Last Scout stars Rita Ramnani, Peter Woodward, Simon Phillips, Rebecca Ferdinando, Deji LaRay, Paul Thomas Arnold, Petra Bryant, and Blaine Gray. Right now there is no release date, but we’ve been hearing about it for a while, and it looks like they’re getting really close to their ultimate goal. If we learn anything more from this, you can bet we’ll let you know.
