At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) showed off goodies from his upcoming film, Pacific Rim. At the end of his panel, he said the production would go into “radio silence” until this Christmas, when the first trailer for Pacific Rim would be released (most likely in front of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit). Well, del Toro was mistaken, because four new images of the production have popped up in Empire Magazine this month. Check out the production photos:
The photos from Empire vary from downtime on the set to del Toro giving actors Idris Elba (Prometheus) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) direction. From the looks of these images, it feels like Pacific Rim will have a Blade Runner-esque gloss with a steampunk look and feel.
These aren’t the first images of Pacific Rim to be released. In July, WB released photos of Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in their battle gear mech suits, as well as Idris Elba looking completely badass.
Based on a script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), Pacific Rim is set in the future where a war breaks out after legions of monstrous creatures rise out of the sea to consume humanity’s resources. Giant freakin‘ robots called Jaegers, which are controlled by the thoughts of the two pilots inside, battle these monsters over the Pacific Ocean. At the edge of defeat, the military has no choice but to send out an obsolete Jaeger with two unlikely heroes, a washed-up former pilot named Raleigh Antrobus (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). They stand as humanity’s only hope.
Pacific Rim will hit theaters next summer on July 12th 2013.
